The U.S. Embassy in Korea always looks forward to opportunities to continue to engage the Korean people in a dialogue on issues related to Korean-American relations.
Because of our desire to enter into an open and honest dialogue with representatives of different groups in Korean society, we gladly accepted an invitation from Voice of People to participate in a panel discussion with several representatives of Korean civic organizations on the topic of issues in Korean-American relations.
That event is now being advertised as a debate between the U.S. Embassy and Hanchongryon, which was not the type of program in which we agreed to participate. We have determined that the Embassy is not in a position to engage in a one-on-one debate with a group that the Korean government has declared illegal.
We seek to ensure that the Korean people have a chance to hear our point of view on U.S.-Korean relations honestly and fairly in order to decide the issues for themselves.
We value Voice of the People¡¯s interest in covering issues that affect the bilateral relationship. The Mission looks forward to working with them to arrange an appropriate forum in the near future in which a well-balanced discussion can be held.
