I have taught English to students in the USA, in South Korea, in China, and now in ... for seven years. I am an American, 58, with the degree of bachelor of liberal studies, a six month diploma in teaching English as a foreign language, and certification in ESL. The six month diploma course of study included five months of volunteer work in a second-language lab at a local high school in Florida. Other courses included educational psychology, lifespan psychology, measurement and testing of students of EFL, social foundations of education, and a special two year study of TEFL culminating in my writing a 270 page manuscript on the subject.
I may be looking for new employment.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor of Liberal Studies from Barry University in 1989.
Certification in ESL from Martin County Literacy Council in 1995.
Diploma in TEFL from the English Language Centre in 1996.
Lifelong learner, perennial student of life.
Very much independent study in TEFL.
EXPERIENCE:
1995: Five months volunteer tutor at Martin County Literacy Council. This was teaching mostly pronunciation to immigrants from Central America and Mexico. Classes were held in the language lab at Spectrum High School in Stuart, Florida.
1996-1998: Two years professor of EFL at Yeungjin Junior College. Here classes were large, usually fifty at a time, and ranging in English language proficiency from beginning to intermediate. The main texts were Side by Side. Other responsibilities included constructing and administering tests and lecturing. The so-called Asian financial crisis greatly reduced our salaries, and sent many teachers back home.
1998: Three months instructor of EFL at Hanil Language Academy. This was a privately owned and very small school that was going out of business then. I taught general conversation and listening. I used movie scripts for teaching listening.
1999: One month instructor of EFL at 21st Century English Language Academy of the China Daily news. I gave lessons and was accepted for employment; however, before signing a contract, a much better opportunity with very much higher pay presented itself, and the pressures of economic necessity took me elsewhere for the next year.
1999-2000: One year teacher of ESL at ELS-Taegu. This was a chain language school in Korea. We taught 30+ hours each week to small classes of about five to ten students. Other duties were administering level tests and other examinations. The main course of study was conversational English.
2000: Three months teacher at Aston English School in Jinan. This was also a chain school, but in China. I taught conversational English.
2003-2004: One year teacher at Aojing International, Ltd. This was a private academy in Beijing, China where the main course of instruction was conversational English. Outside the school I taught to police of the Chao Yang district police department, and to leaders of departments of Beijing municipal government.
2003-2004: Sixteen week semester teaching writing for academic purposes at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. I was at AoJing when this job came up. Someone at CASS fell ill and they needed a teacher to sub for a week. Because the dean of CASS knew the owner of AoJing, she asked him if he knew anyone there who could teach writing for academic purposes. They asked me. I had experience with the subject. The sent me there. In the meantime, the elderly gentleman who fell ill died of a heart attack. I finished out the semester.
2006-2007: One year professor at Shandong Electric Power International School. This school had large classes, with 50 to 60 students in each class. I taught general English, and we finished the year with most of my students making noticeable improvements in all areas of English language proficiency, and achieving high grades on their final exams.
September 1, 2007 to the present. I am currently teaching English to ... in ... for the .... I like the job here, and the other teachers are very good to work with. The job site is ... Institute. I teach personnel of the ....
